Details

Thousands of farmers in Dinajpur Sadar and Chirirbandar upazilas were worried about planting as the water level went down during the boro season. They had to dig a hole from one and a half to two hundred feet and water the land with the help of a pump. But with the construction of a rubber dam on the Atrai River, that picture has changed. Farmers do not have to pay any additional cost to avail irrigation facilities from rubber dams. They are benefiting financially. Production is about seven thousand metric tons of additional food grains. Besides, this project has created opportunities for fish farming in the 44 km long waters of Atrai and Kakra rivers. The rubber dam built on the Mohanpur Atrai river in Sanskarpur union of Sadar upazila on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj road, 18 km east of Dinajpur city, was inaugurated on October 22, 2013. Shankarpur UP Chairman Mokarram Hossain said the 135-meter-long rubber dam has brought blessings to the people of Dinajpur Sadar and Chirirbandar upazilas. With the construction of this rubber dam on the Mohanpur Atrai River, thousands of hectares of land in Sadar Upazila's Shanskarpur, Sheikhpura, Fazilpur, Shashra, Uthrail Union and Chitirbandar's Saitara, Abdulpur, Vial and Aulia Pukur Unions have come under irrigation. Thousands of families in the two upazilas have benefited from this.
